Whole Foods Market is a supermarket chain that specializes in natural and organic food and is considered the largest retailer of natural and organic foods in the United States. Whole Foods was incorporated in 1978 and came into existence on September 20th 1980 with a Grocery Store/ Health Food Store industry. Their product line includes meat, poultry, prepared foods, seafood, bakery, coffee etc. The company has only one operating supermarket segment that is natural and organic foods. In the year 2003, Whole Foods became the first national â€Å"certified organic† grocery store. Whole Foods continues to perform at its very best wit h reported sales growth in the year 2013 of 7%, Net sales of $12.9 billion, Operating income of $883 million and an Operating Margin of 6.8% they continue to produce gains year after year. During the year 2013 the company returned $633 million to shareholders through share buybacks and dividends. According to Pfeffer’s â€Å"Seven Practices of Successful Organization† Whole Foods perform according to only six of Pfeffer’s principles. Whole Foods has not currently adopted Pfeffer’s Employment Security principle. Research didn’t produce much information on Whole Foods providing job security to their employees in economic hardship, this could be because they’ve created such a successful company with gains year after year and they have a clear open transparent relationship with employees. The company does have a 7% rate of Voluntary Turnover. Although Whole Foods doesn’t follow Pfeffer’s Employment Security principle of a success ful organization, Whole Foods still manages to be a high performing organization. Pfeffer’s Employment Security and Whole Foods Whole Foods doesn’t follow the principle of Pfeffer when it comes to providing their employees with job security.
